FIFA FIFPro World XI 2013: TOTY Goalkeepers Shortlist

These five goalkeepers are nominated by their peers for the 2013 FIFA FIFPro World XI (FUT 14 TOTY Goalkeepers):

    Gianluigi Buffon (Italy, Juventus)
Iker Casillas (Spain, Real Madrid CF)
Petr Cech (Czech Republic, Chelsea FC)
Manuel Neuer (Germany, FC Bayern München)
    Víctor Valdés (Spain, FC Barcelona)

This year’s goalkeepers’ shortlist consists of four players who also appeared on the 2012 shortlist, only Joe Hart has failed to make the final cut. The England and Manchester City keeper, who finished second to Casillas in last year’s vote, is replaced by FC Barcelona’s Víctor Valdés, who returns to the prestigious shortlist after a one-year absence. Hart finished in sixth place, narrowly beating David De Gea (Spain, Manchester United) by a handful of votes.

Gianluigi Buffon, Iker Casillas and Petr Cech are regular candidates when it comes to the final stages of selecting the World XI and are on the FUT 14 TOTY Goalkeepers shortlist. Buffon is back for his eighth successive appearance on the five-men shortlist. The Juventus and Italian international veteran, who turns 36 in January, has twice received the ultimate accolade as the World XI Goalkeeper in 2006 and 2007.

Iker Casillas, the undisputed top choice for the players in 2012 and the four previous elections, is under pressure to retain his place in the World XI for the sixth consecutive year. His problems holding down a regular starting berth at Real Madrid have been much publicised, whether under the Spanish club’s former coach José Mourinho or his successor Carlo Ancelotti. Nevertheless, many players had no doubt as they picked Casillas as their best goalkeeper.

Petr Cech sent another reminder, in helping Chelsea to Europa League success, that he remains one of the finest shot-stoppers in the business. Cech’s inclusion on the shortlist is a familiar sight (seventh time) and also notable in that it leaves no room for Thibaut Courtois, the young Belgian on loan to Atlético Madrid from Chelsea, who many expect will ultimately succeed Cech at Stamford Bridge.

Hard to overlook, and even tougher to get past, Germany’s number one Manuel Neuer watched and admired from his penalty area as a formidable Bayern München secured a famous treble, highlighted by its all-conquering run to UEFA Champions League glory. Domestically, Bayern reclaimed top honours and ended Borussia Dortmund’s recent dominance by winning both the Bundesliga title and German Cup.
